Trust in Small Business PAC (TISB), a national political action committee supporting pro-small business candidates, had substantial success in the 2006 elections with its television ad campaigns in support of Bob Corker, elected to the U.S. Senate from Tennessee, Senator Jon Kyl, re-elected to the U.S. Senate from Arizona, and Michele Bachmann, elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Minnesota.
The ad campaign cited each candidate’s commitment to small business and his or her pledge to carry that commitment to Washington.
Businessman Bob Corker (TN) won his hotly contested Tennessee Senate race with the timely help of TISB. TISB’s cable TV ads aired the week before the election in support of what proved to be an extremely close race (50.8% to 48.2%). This timely support helped move this race into the Real Clear Politics’ “leans Republican” column from toss-up on November 3, 2006. The ad campaign was targeted at suburban Nashville where Corker needed a big turnout and he got it!. His margin of victory in the suburban Nashville counties targeted by TISB was sufficient for him to carry the state over Rep. Ford.
Business woman Michele Bachmann (MN 6) handily overcame a strong national tide running against many strong candidates supporting small business to win her open seat race to succeed Rep. Mark Kennedy. Once again TISB’s cable TV ads in support of Bachmann helped propel her to what proved to be a very strong showing (50% to 42%). Real Clear Politics had this race targeted as a tossup on November 6, 2006. TISB’s ad aired last week in Bachmann’s suburban/rural district which covers the counties east, north, & west of Minneapolis/St. Paul.
Senator Jon Kyl (AZ) fended off a possible self-funder to retain his Arizona Senate seat (53% - 44%). TISB weighed in early (late September/early October) with its cable ads supporting Senator Kyl. At the time the race was viewed as one where Senator Kyl was at risk. Our timely support helped keep this race in the Real Clear Politics’ “leans Republican” column on 11.6.06. Senator Kyl has one of the strongest pro-small business records in the Senate.
Two other pro-small business candidates endorsed by TISB were also successful. Gus Bilirakis won his bid for the right to represent FL 9. The final vote was 56% to 44%. TISB Chairman and CEO Ed Pinto said “Gus Bilirakis represents another new house member who we know will put his Trust in Small Business.
Small business owner Vern Buchanan—FL 13 succeeded in fending off a strong challenger by only 300 votes out of almost 240,000 cast. Rep.- elect Buchanan is quoted on his web-site stating: “It’s time small business commanded more of the attention of lawmakers in Washington, DC.”
Ed Pinto said “Rep.-elect Buchanan is absolutely correct - small business represents half of our national economy and jobs, but is sorely underrepresented in Washington.”
TISB congratulates these winning candidates and looks forward to working with them in the years ahead. We know that they will put their Trust in Small Business
